Ionized Gas inside the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 1

چکیده
We have studied the differences between the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and the H ii regions along a slit position in the local dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The slit position passes through the two most prominent H ii regions: Hubble V and Hubble X. Important differences have been found in the excitation, ionization, and [N ii]λ6584Å/Hα and [S ii]λ6717Å/Hα line ratios between the DIG and the H ii locations. Moreover, the values of all the line ratios are not similar to those in the DIG locations of spiral galaxies but are very similar to the values in other irregular galaxies, such as IC 10. We also determined the rate of recombination using the He i λ 5875 line. Finally, we obtained a picture of the ionization sources of the DIG. We consider that the leakage of photons from the H ii regions might explain most of the line ratios, except [N ii]/Hα, which might be explained by turbulence.

The Effect of Star Formation on Molecular Clouds in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies: IC 10 and NGC 6822
We have observed the CO J=2−1 and J=3−2 lines at a few locations in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. In addition, we have observed the CO J=2−1 line for IC 10 and the first detection of the CO J=3−2 transition in a Local Group galaxy. The CO line ratios in IC 10 are uniform and are consistent with the average line ratios observed in M33 at...
متن کاملGiant Halos in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies vs. Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks ...
متن کاملar X iv : a st ro - p h / 98 03 04 1 v 1 4 M ar 1 99 8 AN OLD CLUSTER IN NGC 6822
We present spectroscopy of two clusters in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. From these we deduce an age for Cluster VII of 11 −3 Gyr and [Fe/H] = −1.95±0.15 dex. Cluster VII appears to be an analog of the metal-poor galactic globular clusters. Cluster VI is found to be much younger and more metal rich, with an age of approximately 2 Gyr. Its derived metallicity, [Fe/H] ≈ −1.0 dex, is compar...

متن کاملMagnetic Fields and Ionized Gas in the Local Group Irregular Galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822
We performed a high-sensitivity search for galaxy-scale magnetic fields by radio polarimetry at 10.45 GHz and 4.85 GHz with the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, accompanied by Hα imaging, for the two Local Group irregular galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822. Their star-forming bodies are small and rotate slowly. IC 10 is known to have a very high star-forming activity, resembling blue compact dwarfs, ...
